Marriage and Family

Uruguayan family law is one of the most progressive in Latin America. Uruguay was one of the first countries worldwide to legalize same-sex marriage (2013).

Family law is applied by specialized family courts (Juzgados de Familia). Uruguay was also the first country with divorce rights for women (1913).
