Uruguayan civil law is regulated by the Código Civil and is based on the continental European legal system. It governs legal relationships between private individuals.

Uruguay's Código Civil was adopted in 1868 and has been modernized several times. It regulates, among other things, contracts, property, inheritance and civil liability.
